Here you'll unlock the secrets behind characters, earn money to beef up your stats, find weapons and unravel the mystery behind Royal Palms Resort's infestation. The island is incredibly huge, which encourages your investigation. Taking on side missions only takes you deeper down the rabbit hole; it also allows for more player progression, which we gamers are completely ok with.

Objects you find can be combined at workbenches to create more powerful weaponry, but this isn't Dead Rising and you won't be strapping chainsaws to an umbrella to create a twirling device of zombie death. Instead the modifications are far more realistic and practical, such as hammering a nine inch nail through a bat in order to make each swing more lethal.

The game burst into the public eye with Techland's first cinematic trailer, depicting the last moment of a doomed holidaying family. The trailer is surprisingly effective and tugs firmly on your heartstrings. It's easy to get excited about a cinematic trailer, but it showed no gameplay. While the trailer makes the game seem more terrifying than it plays, the concept it introduced was horror in the sun and a zombie outbreak approached in an adult way. Which the game, so far, delivers.

Something about the breakdown of society and the new zombie world order appeals to me. Is that so wrong? (probably) On that note, I was recently invited down to Melbourne for the chance to preview the first hour of Techland's Dead Island. Hosted by Mana Bar Melbourne, the infectiously fun gaming/bar mash-up, our press event was followed by a community tiki-themed zombie bash. Because the undead love a good party.

'Dead Island': Preview

http://www.digitalspy.com/gaming/news/a332576/dead-island-preview.html A hangover from hell While our hands-on with Dead Island's first hour saw some of the same areas seen in our recent eyes-on preview, it gives us a chance to see how the combat works in practice, as well as sample some of the game's opening moments. Waking up in your room, probably with a monster hangover, there are bigger problems to contend with. Tasked with escaping the hotel to safety, while it's not exactly clear what dangers lurk in the outside world, things within obviously aren't right; luggage is stacked up and blocking exits, room doors are sprung open, and there's the key giveaway of the occasional dead body strewn on the floor.

Deep Silver's Dead Island takes over PlayStation®Home

Set in an open world tropical island, hordes of different festering zombies await players around every corner while they embark on a variety of thrilling missions through the holiday resort. With firearms and ammunition being scarce the player must rely on discovering and utilizing items as weapons for self-defense and fighting off zombie hordes in intense melee combat. A diverse range of items can be collected and will later serve to transform the player's ordinary makeshift weapons into serious instruments of destruction.

Is Dead Island The Next Great Zombie Game?

http://www.gamepro.com/article/previews/221494/is-dead-island-the-next-great-zombie-game/ Dead Island has the potential to be the next great zombie video game. And I don't throw that praise out lightly. Much like how vampire-themed fiction bloats the film world, there's no shortage of video games featuring the undead. What makes Dead Island different and exciting, however, is that developer Deep Silver is bringing players to a world overrun by flesh-eaters in a way we haven't really seen before.

Dead Island Preview (Xbox360)

http://www.strategyinformer.com/xbox360/deadisland/612/preview.html There's plenty left that we haven't explored - the skill tree system for example, and properly getting into the various 'classes' and who can handle what kind of weapons. The interface isn't very good at feedback in that instance, and there's a lot of weapon stats thrown at you. RPG-veterans shouldn't have a problem adapting to this, but more casual players may be put off. Hopefully they'll be plenty of information available in some form to help the player out.

We've only had limited exposure to the whole quest hub aspect of the game- our test quest wasn't the most inspiring thing ever though - We had to wade through hordes of zombies just to stick up some posters, but what can you do.The hub-system is what sets it apart though from the competition, so hopefully the rest of the game will be more interesting. It's worth noting that it's not completely open-world in the sense that the whole island is open at once, but the local area you're in at the time will be completely open to you.

Finally, we asked Kummer about the replay ability of Dead Island. There will be a New Game super hard mode when you beat the game, if you are looking for a little more punishment. Kummer also pointed out that when you beat the game, you may want to try out a new class and that the zombies are randomly generated according to the situation and zone you are in. This fact alone greatly increases the replayability of Dead Island both playing alone and with friends.

Character interactions won't affect the overall ending of the game, but they certainly add to the overall story. One particular situation has a man pleading with you to kill his wife, who has been turned. This seems to be a moral dilemma, but is only one of many kinds of interactions to be expected during the course of the game.

Dead Island Roundtable Interview

http://www.rpgamer.com/news/Q3-2011/071511b.html

Another topic that was heavily touched on in the roundtable was the game's story, theme, and setting. Earlier this year, Deep Silver released an emotional CG trailer that set the internet ablaze. The trailer depicted a perfect family being destroyed on an idyllic island resort by a hoard of zombies. When asked if the game could ever match the trailer, Kummer made it clear that the trailer is representative of the main story's tone and the prevailing theme on the island itself. The four main characters in the game are the last hope for the people on Banoi island.Throughout the course of the game, you will often be tasked with emotionally charged quests. It could be something as happy as reuniting someone with their only surviving family members or as difficult and sad as being asked to kill an infected loved one to put them out of their misery. A lot of the emotion from the game comes not from you or your party members but the unfortunate people stuck on Banoi island. The island itself will also reflect a theme of beauty and perfection slowly being destroyed. Over the course of the main quest, a powerful storm slowly descends upon the island. The weather turns from clear blue skies to dark gray rain clouds and violent winds. This should prove to be a rather gloomy yet engaging experience.
